Arwen's meanderings

Hi everyone and welcome to my dinghy cruising blog about my John Welsford designed 'navigator' named Arwen. Built over three years, Arwen was launched in August 2007. She is a standing lug yawl 14' 6" in length. This blog records our dinghy cruising voyages together around the coastal waters of SW England.
Arwen has an associated YouTube channel so visit www.YouTube.com/c/plymouthwelshboy to find our most recent cruises and click subscribe.
On this blog you will find posts about dinghy cruising locations, accounts of our voyages, maintenance tips and 'How to's' ranging from rigging standing lug sails and building galley boxes to using 'anchor buddies' and creating 'pilotage notes'. I hope you find something that inspires you to get out on the water in your boat. Drop us a comment and happy sailing.

Servicing your outboard

Gulp! I am about to try doing some basic servicing on my Tohatsu four stroke 3.5hp outboard for the first time.

I have just placed an order for

  • engine oil 1 Lt 10w-30
  • gear lub oil - SAE 90 275ml and attachment to get it in the right places
  • some new shear and split pins
  • a new spark plug NGK DCPR-6E
  • new gear case oil plug washers
I'm musing on whether I have the ability to check and if need be replace the impeller.

Gulp!

You're going to need to check it, so you may as well replace it.. :o)

The impeller is probably the most important thing as Steve T W says you need to check it so might as well replace and if the old one is still good keep it for an emergency spare. Grease all the screws and nuts on re assembly so it’ll be easy next time, Biggest problem is people don’t check and then when the impeller goes everything is seized solid.
