Arwen's meanderings

Hi everyone and welcome to my dinghy cruising blog about my John Welsford designed 'navigator' named Arwen. Built over three years, Arwen was launched in August 2007. She is a standing lug yawl 14' 6" in length. This blog records our dinghy cruising voyages together around the coastal waters of SW England.
Arwen has an associated YouTube channel so visit www.YouTube.com/c/plymouthwelshboy to find our most recent cruises and click subscribe.
On this blog you will find posts about dinghy cruising locations, accounts of our voyages, maintenance tips and 'How to's' ranging from rigging standing lug sails and building galley boxes to using 'anchor buddies' and creating 'pilotage notes'. I hope you find something that inspires you to get out on the water in your boat. Drop us a comment and happy sailing.

Replacing the impeller and gear lube in a Tohatsu four stroke 3.5 hp outboard engine

Those of a squeamish disposition - you may need a stiff drink towards the end. I refrained from showing the clips where the outboard was vertically upside down. 'Desperate times, desperate measures' and all that!

This is a steep learning curve! The Tohatsu dealer didn't get back to me in the end - a shame.

Take pity - remember this is my first time ever servicing an outboard engine!

All good here... just waiting for my way out of the current madness to appear, and the opportunity to go and splash some paint on Sparrow for the new season..

Glad to hear you are ok. Tohatsu got back to me and have confirmed it is a collapsed shaft bearing that has not been fitted properly at the factory. They were horrified that it had been dispatched to a dealer who then sold it to me without spotting the problem and then even more horrified that my servicing engineer hadn't spotted or mentioned it despite doing five services on it.
Ho hum!
