An estuary entrance reccy

  1. It's a lovely river, right enough, albeit a shortish navigable length (inless you're in a kayak). Very muddy half way up and thence to Aveton Gifford and dries out to mud very quickly on the ebb. However one pronounces Aveton Gifford, someone will tell you it's incorrest. My father-in-law (from a Salcombe family) always called it "Aveton (pronouncing the "e" as you did in the clip) Gifford" with a "J", so I go with him, but you'll get Awton, too. Take your pick - I always rely on true native pronunciation. Can't wait to see how you get on with the trip.
    Regards, Stuart
