Costa Rica

Tropical storms

Storms are impressive in the tropics. The rumbles of thunder are huge. Lightening forks across the sky in crazy patterns. The sky lights up and the huge downpours that follow bring branches crashing to the floor. I sometimes wonder how tin roofs withstand some of the impact. With the rain comes a refreshing and much welcome breeze which relieves the intense humidity for a few precious minutes. The ground is saturated......huge pools merge and trickle into one another. Everything at ground level sparkles in the merging daylight, glistening like a thousand scattered gemstones.

The trees sway ominously. In their competition for life, the race for light against their neighbours, many trees have learned to grow straight and tall with slender trunks which sway great distances in the stormy breezes. With all their branches up high, they are top heavy. Whilst I sit here hoping that their roots go deep, in truth I know it is not the case. Tropical rainforest trees are notorious for being shallow buttress rooted and forever toppling down.  Costa Rica brings with it a real sense of Adventure and exploration!
